There is a not-insignificant feeling of freedom when you finally realize that it's OK to tell someone that you can't care about their problems more than they do.
For my part, I got a call from some charity or other asking for money (what else?) for the children. I countered with my own solicitation - I'm broke. Send me some of that money you've got. I need it more than you do. Give that money to me.
